Minors in Art ![]()
The Art Department now offers, to the general student population, minors in three areas: art studio, art history, and art teaching. The specific requirements are detailed in the EKU undergraduate catalog, but they are generally comprised of a portion of the Foundation or Core requirements listed above. As such, these minors (with the exception of studio) could be earned by degree candidates in Art with the completion of only a few more hours outside their degrees. Candidates for the B.A. in Art are particularly encouraged, given the liberal-arts direction of their study, to pursue a minor or minors within the scope of their elective portion of hours. The newest minor in art history was conceived to better prepare degree candidates for admission to graduate study in that area.

BFA Studio Options ![]()
The purpose of each option in the BFA degree program is to develop a strong professional approach and nurture individual creativity in those students showing the capacity for and interest in advanced study in one of the seven studio areas that comprise the Department of Art. Because of this, admission to the BFA program is selective. Application is open to students who have reached a suitably advanced level by completing a minimum of their Foundation and Core requirements, who have maintained an average of B in their art courses, and who submit a portfolio for review. Beyond the core, BFA students must complete another 27 hours in their studio option and/or art electives, pass a mid-program portfolio review and a final exhibition review, and submit a thesis paper acceptable to their BFA committee.
Completing Your BFA Application
Please make sure that all works are ready for presentation – mat or mount drawings, edge strip canvases, and prepare 3-D works. If you have questions about the process or your readiness in terms of course work, see Joe Molinaro, BFA Coordinator. Phone 622-1634.

Student Support and Amenities ![]()
The approximately 150 Art students at Eastern are advised from within the Department by three faculty advisers rotated from the faculty at large for a term of three years. They are responsible for seeing their students through the registration process each term, and keeping them on track with regard to their specific Art degree requirements. Advising also occurs at the College level, where qualifications for graduation are monitored, including all University requirements in General Education and electives. BFA students are also advised in terms of their preparation for that degree, and for their professional careers after graduation, by their area chairs and BFA committees.
Financial Aid ![]()
Financial Aid for students at Eastern is generally available through the University's Financial Assistance office (Coates Box 4A, ph. 622-2361).
Amenities ![]()
Art students have some general perks in addition to those available in particular studio areas. Each term, individuals enrolled in Art classes are provided with cards that identify them as such; the cards entitle them to use of those Department facilities and resources that are limited to Art students, such as the wood shop and computer lab. Privileges of the card include use of a personal, secured hall locker for storage of class materials, and access to the Department's resale store.
The resale store makes available, at a cost far below retail markup, materials that students will be expected to use in their art classes. The store is stocked by faculty in each area, from funds budgeted to the Department, based on the projects they intend to assign in any given term. Once given their assignments, students then pay into a University account and show receipts to have materials distributed to them from the store. The intent is to reduce the burden inherent in the rising costs of art supplies, and to provide a convenience to the students by having the right materials readily at hand. The resale store has also made it possible to avoid the necessity of charging lab fees to students for their studio classes.
